Matilda sick on sofa Feb13You may have noticed things have been a little quiet on here recently, that’s mainly because I spent the best part of last week in bed with flu (with the cutest sick bed companion). The latest in what has felt like a never ending series of colds and bugs in our house since early December and quite honestly we’re getting a bit fed up.

I don’t think I’ve ever had proper flu before and it really kicked my arse. For someone who is pretty active finding yourself feeling dreadful and lacking the energy to even get out of bed is horrible. I’d love to have gone out for a run to try to sweat it out but I think I would have probably collapsed in a ditch somewhere.

I think this is what frustrates me the most; I’m fit and healthy. I don’t smoke, I haven’t had an alcoholic drink this year, I drink 1 cup of coffee and 2-3 cups of tea a day, I eat a balanced diet, we don’t eat takeaway or processed food, I eat fruit and vegetables every day. So why are we getting sick so much? Is it just inevitable when you have small children who pick these things up from friends etc? Is there something fundamental missing from our diet?

Whatever it is we need to find a solution otherwise I may just as well start paying my salary directly to Boots or the manufacturers of Calpol. Incidentally while on the subject of medicine why is it that Ibuprofen is sugar coated and easy to swallow but paracetamol isn’t? The things your mind questions when you spend a week taking drugs.

We have made one decision though and that is that the whole family is having some form of multi vitamin everyday. I’ve resisted for a while, repeating the mantra ‘we have a balanced diet we don’t need multi vitamins’. But maybe we do and if swallow one pill each morning helps stave off bugs then I’m all for it. Plus with Henry in the process of weaning and Matilda having inevitable fussy eating periods as an almost 2 year old then topping them up with some nice tasting liquid vitamins can’t be a bad thing can it?

But what about you, do any of you use multi vitamins? What foods do you swear by as essential to keeping bugs away? Have you taken any other steps to try to stop the continuous cycle of illnesses in your house?
