Bugs, drugs and multi vitamins

Matilda sick on sofa Feb13You may have noticed things have been a little quiet on here recently, that’s mainly because I spent the best part of last week in bed with flu (with the cutest sick bed companion). The latest in what has felt like a never ending series of colds and bugs in our house since early December and quite honestly we’re getting a bit fed up.

I don’t think I’ve ever had proper flu before and it really kicked my arse. For someone who is pretty active finding yourself feeling dreadful and lacking the energy to even get out of bed is horrible. I’d love to have gone out for a run to try to sweat it out but I think I would have probably collapsed in a ditch somewhere.

I think this is what frustrates me the most; I’m fit and healthy. I don’t smoke, I haven’t had an alcoholic drink this year, I drink 1 cup of coffee and 2-3 cups of tea a day, I eat a balanced diet, we don’t eat takeaway or processed food, I eat fruit and vegetables every day. So why are we getting sick so much? Is it just inevitable when you have small children who pick these things up from friends etc? Is there something fundamental missing from our diet?

Whatever it is we need to find a solution otherwise I may just as well start paying my salary directly to Boots or the manufacturers of Calpol. Incidentally while on the subject of medicine why is it that Ibuprofen is sugar coated and easy to swallow but paracetamol isn’t? The things your mind questions when you spend a week taking drugs.

We have made one decision though and that is that the whole family is having some form of multi vitamin everyday. I’ve resisted for a while, repeating the mantra ‘we have a balanced diet we don’t need multi vitamins’. But maybe we do and if swallow one pill each morning helps stave off bugs then I’m all for it. Plus with Henry in the process of weaning and Matilda having inevitable fussy eating periods as an almost 2 year old then topping them up with some nice tasting liquid vitamins can’t be a bad thing can it?

But what about you, do any of you use multi vitamins? What foods do you swear by as essential to keeping bugs away? Have you taken any other steps to try to stop the continuous cycle of illnesses in your house?

All help and advice appreciated.

We take multi vitamins that contain minerals including zinc and also super strong probiotics (from healthspan) (these are supposed to boost the immune system) We too eat healthily and never eat junk or convenience food. True we don’t have small children living with us all the time but we very rarely get colds or any other bugs. Hope you all feel better soon.

I used to but I don’t any more, after I read there’s no real evidence that they do any good. there are some that help but I can’t remember what they are, sorry! Being ill is awful: hope you get well soon :)

yeah I’m not convinced but after the last couple of months willing to give it a go! Also making me even more conscious when planning meals to get a good balance

I used to laugh at people that swore by vitamins, etc, but I have to say that I am now in the habit of taking echinacea, vitamin c and zinc in the hopes that it will do something for my immune system. It’s been a few years since I started this, and I have noticed that I am ill less frequently, and can fight off bugs faster than before. Impossible to tell whether it’s linked or just good luck, but I figure it can’t hurt to carry on with the suppliments.

Funnily enough, I was just thinking about how different this winter has been compared with last year when Arlo got every bug going and was ill every 3 weeks. This year so far we’ve got away with just 2 minor colds. I think we are all sleeping a lot better this year, and that has remarkable benefits for the immune system.

agree on the sleeping makes a whole world of difference. Taking some extra booster can’t hurt can it? At least gives some peace of mind

Hope you are on the mend now. I think we all have times like this. Mine was last winter, the boy and I had a cold that literally seemed to last for about three months! I give bassets chewy vits to the boy now as he is 4 and actually he hasnt caught the last two colds the girl has had. Maybe just coincidence but there we go. They have the same diet, loads of raw fruit and veg!

Well, I think there is no answer for flu, I am also searching …..

I think that one of the problems with food nowadays is that it doesn’t have the same amount of nutrients that it had 50 years ago and also many foods contain contaminants too.
