The great gig meme in the sky

A new meme has been created by Musodad and the fine gentleman that is Slightly Suburban dad has tagged me in it. For once I think this is actually quite an interesting meme as it focuses on gigs we’ve been to.

So here’s the deal, I have to list my first/worst/best/last/dream gigs and then add them to the Spotify playlist (or tweet mMsodad to add them). Well I haven’t exactly been prolific in attending gigs but I have been to a few so here goes:

First gig

This was to see the excellent Ocean Colour Scene in Milton Keynes. Me and 5 mates from school all headed up there to see a band that we were truly obsessed with. We arrived early, bought some band merchandise and took up position right in front of the stage. The band didn’t disappoint, they were in their prime and delivered all the favourites plus a couple of great covers including Day Tripper.

Track added – Ocean Colour Scene / The Riverboat song

Worst gig

Tough this one, I haven’t been to loads of gigs and most have been pretty good. But if I had to pick it would be Bombay Bicycle Club in Oxford a couple of years ago. Good band but I went with my then 17 year old brother and his mates. I was the only one able to drink and felt properly old and out of touch with what was fashionable. So for that reason alone I’m picking it as worst gig

Track added – Bombay Bicycle Club / Always like this

Best gig

This is a close one between Kings of Leon at the Bristol Academy before they made it big and Stereophonics at Colston Hall in Bristol. Both were small gigs and bands that truly rocked. But I think Stereophonics just pip it. It was a last minute gig announced 2 weeks before to give them a warm up before they hit the festivals. The lady of the manor and I are big fans so snapped up the tickets and arrived early. We got into position 3 people from the front giving her a great view of Kelly Jones…. It was incredible seeing them in a small venue and the noise was incredible.

Track added – Stereophonics / A thousand trees

Last gig

I think the last gig I went to was the Bombay Bicycle Club one, so as I’ve written about that already I’m going to cheat and pick the gig before that. Which was The Black Keys at the Firkin in Bristol. They really weren’t known that well here at that point and that venue is truly tiny, maybe 300 people at most. It’s amazing the noise 2 guys with a drum kit and a guitar can make but they were great. I kind of forgot about them since then but in the last couple of months have become a bit obsessed with their new album and one song in particular which is my pick.

Track added – The Black Keys / Gold on your ceiling

Dream gig

Hmmm so many options, I’d have loved to see Led Zeppelin in their prime or Oasis in the early 90’s but I think my dream gig would be Frank Sinatra. Such a dude, what a track listing, amazing. Enough said.

Track added – Frank Sinatra / Come fly with me

So there you have it, what do you think? It would of course be wrong for me not to tag a few people. I hope the following will share their gig history.

  1. Fantastic post mate, I am loving reading these so much. Ocean Colour Scene – what a great band. Shame about BBC, I’ve never seen them but love their stuff. Stereophonics – classic. A Thousand Trees is an amazing song. Need to listen to more of The Black Keys, only know a couple of their songs (really like ‘Sinister Kid’). What you said really reminds me of when I saw The White Stripes – can’t believe 2 people can make so much noise! Frank = Legend. All songs added to playlist bar ‘Gold on the ceiling’ as it’s not on Spotify. ‘Lonely Boy’ is only one from latest album on there so have added that. Hope that’s okay. Thanks for taking part!

  2. Nice to see a meme that is a bit different. I am so uncool I hardly know any of the bands you mention! Mich x

  3. I love this meme and you have a great selection. Oasis weren’t all that in the nineties 😉 !
It’s nice to see a band that is huge now in that time before at a smaller venue. I bet Kings of Leon were pretty good in that venue.
Thanks for the tag. All done x

  4. Thanks for taking up the baton and coming up with such great choices. I am working from home on Wednesday coming up. That Spotify list is going on FULL BLAST 🙂

  5. I saw Oasis in the mid-90s – Earls Court, just after the second album came out and before they went truly stratospheric. That would have to be up there as one of my best. I saw them again a year late at the much-lauded Knebworth gigs which was a great experience but not a patch on Earls Court. You already know my last gig from some facebook mocking last week – enough said on that.
